Saryarka still answers to its old name, Tselinograd, grain capital of the steppe, and the tempo tells the story: pensioners trading gossip on benches, kids in matching blazers, a tram clanging along the same rails it rode before the flag changed. No flash, no script. The Left Bank owns the skyline. The Right Bank keeps the receipts. Zelyony Bazar is the best reason to come: dairy aisles reeking of kefir and rock-hard kurt, vendors haggling in Kazakh and Russian at once, samsa carts doing sunrise business outside the station. Locals eat here. Summer evenings, families haul blankets and thermoses to the parks and stay until the stars feel close. Skip the glitz for one afternoon. Walk the wide Soviet boulevards, duck into a teah chaykhana for laghman and green tea. You will leave with a straighter picture of Kazakhstani city life than any glass tower can give you.

The Right Bank is well served by Astana's bus network, routes run frequently along Respublika Avenue and the main cross-streets, and the flat terrain makes most of Saryarka District accessible without much walking. Trams still operate on some corridors and have a particular Soviet-era charm, though they run slower than buses and shouldn't be relied on for tight schedules. Taxis are inexpensive by most international comparisons and easily hailed on the street or via the standard Kazakh ride-hailing apps. The short distances within the Right Bank mean fares are typically modest. For the Zelyony Bazar area, it's worth walking between stops, the streets immediately around the market are a destination in themselves, and you'd miss a lot from a car window.
